At NeuroKind Psychology, we embrace a neuroaffirmative approach, celebrating each individual's unique profile of strengths and challenges. We believe that understanding neurodiversity can promote acceptance, reduce stigma, and empower neurodivergent individuals to thrive. Neurodiversity is the concept that neurological differences which include; autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other psychological presentations are natural variations of the human existence. Neurodiverse affirming practice respects that these differences are part of normal variation rather than "disorders" to be "fixed."
The bottom-up approach in psychology focuses on addressing the foundational, physiological responses that drive emotions and behaviours. This is particularly helpful for trauma-informed care, where it’s essential to start by working with the body and sensory experiences, helping clients regulate and feel safe before exploring cognitive processes. For many neurodivergent individuals, the bottom-up approach can provide an effective way to manage intense emotional experiences and build resilience, offering grounding tools that can serve as a foundation for cognitive and behavioural growth.
Psychologists hold a doctoral degree in psychology and provide therapy and counseling services. Psychiatrists hold a medical degree and are trained to diagnose and treat mental health disorders with medications, in addition to providing therapy.
